J.H. Newman poeta: un paio di canti scritti dal beato inglese.

Alcuni dei canti di Chiesa più amati, sia dai cattolici che dagli anglicani (e anche dai metodisti), sono stati scritti nientemeno che dal beato che oggi festeggiamo, il Card. Newman, non solo insigne teologo, ma anche paroliere efficace.
Per questo, concludendo i festeggiamenti in suo onore, vi presento i suoi inni.
Il primo, scritto nel 1866, Praise to the Holiest, è tratto da un Oratorio composto dal futuro cardinale, intitolato "Il sogno di Geronzio". Ascoltiamo questo inno dalla trasmissione televisiva della BBC "Songs of Praise": per chi non la conoscesse, si tratta di un programma settimanale della TV pubblica in cui vengono presentati - e si è invitati a cantare insieme - inni e canti di Chiesa! Impensabile in Italia.


Praise to the Holiest in the height,
and in the depth be praise;
in all his words most wonderful,
most sure in all his ways!

O loving wisdom of our God!
When all was sin and shame,
a second Adam to the fight
and to the rescue came.

O wisest love! that flesh and blood,
which did in Adam fail,
should strive afresh against the foe,
should strive, and should prevail;

and that the highest gift of grace
should flesh and blood refine:
God's presence and his very self,
and essence all-divine.

O generous love! that he who smote
in man for ma the foe,
the double agony in Man
for man should undergo.

And in the garden secretly,
and on the cross on high,
should teach his brethren, and inspire
to suffer and to die.

Come ci ricordava Padre Giovanni Scalese in un commento al post precedente, il beato J.H. Newman ha composto un altro celeberrimo inno: Lead kindly light. Lo scrisse nel 1833, ancora giovane prete anglicano, durante un viaggio in Italia, tormentato dalle domande e dall'inquietudine, che si calmerà solo più tardi, guidato dalla gentile luce divina alla pienezza della verità cattolica. L'inno è cantato in questo video dal Coro di Wells Cathedral:


Lead, kindly Light, amid th'encircling gloom,
lead thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home;
lead thou me on!
Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see
the distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou
shouldst lead me on;
I loved to choose and see my path; but now
lead thou me on!
I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears,
pride ruled my will: remember not past years!

So long thy power hath blessed me, sure it still
will lead me on.
O'er moor and fen, o'er crag and torrent, till
